Nickels are typically thought of as common pocket change, but some rare and historic pieces have sold for thousands—or even millions—of dollars. These coins stand out due to their rarity, minting errors, or historical significance. For collectors, finding one of these valuable nickels is like striking gold.

1913 Liberty Head Nickel

Arguably the most famous and valuable nickel of all time is the 1913 Liberty Head nickel. Only five are known to exist, and their origin is shrouded in mystery since the U.S. Mint officially switched to the Buffalo nickel design that year. These nickels were never authorized for production, yet a small number were secretly struck and later surfaced in private collections. One sold for over $4 million at auction, making it a true icon in the coin world.

1926-S Buffalo Nickel

The 1926-S Buffalo nickel is highly sought after due to its low mintage and difficulty in finding well-preserved examples. While millions were produced, very few were struck with sharp detail. A high-grade specimen can fetch over $50,000, making it one of the most valuable Buffalo nickels ever minted. The “S” mint mark indicates it was struck at the San Francisco Mint.

1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo Nickel

One of the most famous error coins is the 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo nickel. This coin was the result of overpolishing a die at the Denver Mint, which accidentally removed one of the buffalo’s front legs. The error wasn’t immediately caught, and thousands were released into circulation. Today, a well-preserved version can sell for $10,000 or more, depending on condition.

1942-P War Nickel with Full Steps

During World War II, the U.S. adjusted the metal content of nickels, removing most of the nickel in favor of silver. The 1942-P war nickel was one of these, and certain versions with full steps on Monticello (the building on the reverse) are particularly valuable. If the steps are crisp and fully visible, collectors will pay a premium. A pristine, full-step example can bring in several thousand dollars.

1880 Shield Nickel

The Shield nickel, minted from 1866 to 1883, also has a few standout rarities. The 1880 Shield nickel is one of the scarcest, with fewer than 20,000 struck. Most of those that survived are in poor condition, so a high-grade example is a collector’s dream. These coins can sell for over $10,000, depending on their condition and strike quality.
