Potatoes are a versatile and beloved comfort food, but how they’re prepared can make a huge difference when it comes to health. While plain boiled or baked potatoes can be part of a balanced diet, certain potato dishes are loaded with fat, sodium, and empty calories. When deep-fried, smothered in cheese, or drenched in creamy sauces, this humble vegetable turns into a nutritional hazard. Here are some of the most unhealthy potato dishes to be mindful of.

Loaded Cheese Fries

Few dishes are more indulgent—or more damaging to your health—than loaded cheese fries. This dish typically starts with a heaping pile of deep-fried French fries, which are then smothered in melted cheese, bacon bits, and sour cream. The combination of high saturated fat, sodium, and refined carbohydrates makes it a calorie bomb. While undeniably delicious, loaded cheese fries offer little nutritional value and can quickly derail even the best dietary intentions.

Potato Gratin

Also known as scalloped potatoes, potato gratin is a creamy, rich side dish made by layering thinly sliced potatoes with heavy cream, cheese, and sometimes butter. Baked until bubbly and golden, this dish is comforting—but extremely high in calories and saturated fat. It’s often served in large portions and can add up fast in both fat and sodium. While it may be a holiday favorite, it’s not something to enjoy on a regular basis if heart health is a priority.

Fast Food French Fries

French fries are one of the most commonly consumed potato dishes, especially from fast food restaurants. Unfortunately, they’re also among the least healthy. These fries are deep-fried in oils that may contain trans fats or high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, which can contribute to inflammation. They’re often heavily salted and may contain preservatives or artificial flavorings. A large order can exceed daily limits for both sodium and fat in just one sitting.

Tater Tots

Tater tots are small, crispy cylinders of grated and fried potatoes. While they may seem like a fun snack or side dish, tater tots are usually heavily processed and deep-fried, leading to high levels of unhealthy fats. They’re often served with dipping sauces or covered in cheese and bacon, adding even more calories and sodium. Despite their small size, it’s easy to eat a lot of them quickly without realizing just how unhealthy they are.

Potato Skins

Potato skins sound harmless enough, but they’re often loaded with ingredients that turn them into a nutritional nightmare. These appetizers are usually deep-fried, then filled with cheese, bacon, and sour cream. The outer skin itself is nutritious, but once it’s been fried and topped with heavy ingredients, the health benefits vanish. They’re high in saturated fat and often consumed in excess due to their snackable size.
