Since its debut in 1964, the Ford Mustang has become one of the most iconic American muscle cars. Over the decades, Ford has produced a wide variety of Mustangs—some built for speed, others for style. Among them are a few exceptionally rare models that collectors dream of owning. These rare Mustangs were made in limited numbers and are highly sought after due to their performance, design, and historical value. Here’s a look at some of the rarest Ford Mustangs ever made.

1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake

The 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake is often considered the Holy Grail of classic Mustangs. Only one was ever made. Built by Carroll Shelby as a high-performance test car for Goodyear tires, the Super Snake featured a 427-cubic-inch V8 borrowed from the Ford GT40. With over 500 horsepower, it was one of the fastest street-legal cars of its time. It was never mass-produced, making it a true one-of-a-kind Mustang.

1969 Mustang Boss 429

The Boss 429 was created to meet NASCAR homologation requirements and featured a massive 429-cubic-inch V8 engine built for high-speed racing. Ford only produced 1,359 units in 1969, making it one of the rarest performance Mustangs. It was known for its aggressive looks and wide front end, designed to accommodate the huge engine. Today, surviving models in good condition command six-figure prices at auctions.

1965 Shelby GT350 R

Only 36 units of the 1965 Shelby GT350 R were ever built, making it one of the rarest racing Mustangs. The GT350 R was a track-only version of the Shelby GT350 and was stripped down for maximum performance. It featured a high-revving 289-cubic-inch V8, race-tuned suspension, and lightweight body panels. These cars dominated SCCA racing in their day and are now prized collector items.

2000 SVT Cobra R

Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) released the 2000 Cobra R as a no-frills performance monster. Only 300 units were produced, all in Performance Red. The car packed a naturally aspirated 5.4-liter V8 producing 385 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual transmission. It had no rear seats, air conditioning, or radio—all in the name of saving weight. For enthusiasts, it remains one of the most focused track-ready Mustangs ever built.

1995 Cobra R

Even rarer than its 2000 counterpart, the 1995 Cobra R saw only 250 units produced. It came with a 5.8-liter V8, upgraded brakes, and suspension designed for road racing. Like the 2000 version, it sacrificed comfort features for performance, and it remains one of the most desirable Mustangs from the 1990s.
